Voices from the Journey : My Rapé Ceremony: A Journey into Stillness and Truth

I’m writing this a few days after my rapé ceremony, still sitting with the medicine, still letting its teachings ripple through my daily life.

I didn’t know what to expect going in. I had heard that rapé (pronounced ha-PAY) was intense—that it clears energy, opens the third eye, grounds you deeply—but words can only point to the experience. They don’t prepare you for the moment the medicine meets you, face to face, breath to breath.

The Calling

I felt drawn to rapé during a time when my energy was scattered. I was in my head too much, overwhelmed by decisions, emotions, and this sense of spiritual stagnation. It wasn’t depression, exactly—but a numbness, like I was watching my life from a distance.

When I heard about a small, guided ceremony being held by a trusted friend and medicine carrier, I knew I had to be there. It wasn’t curiosity that pulled me. It felt like a calling.

Stepping Into the Ceremony

The altar was simple but powerful—feathers, stones, a candle, a bowl of rapé, and two pipes: the kuripe and the tepi. We smudged ourselves, said our prayers, and offered a few drops of mapacho to the spirits of the land. I could feel the weight of the space shift. It was sacred now.

When it was my turn, I knelt in front of the altar, heart pounding. The facilitator asked me to set an intention. I whispered it softly:
“Clarity. Presence. Truth.”

She nodded, holding the tepi to my left nostril.
“Breathe in when I say.”

The Medicine Speaks

The moment the rapé entered my system, it was like lightning through my skull. Sharp. Sudden. Deep. My entire body tensed, and then softened.

It burned. It buzzed. I coughed and my eyes watered, but I stayed still.

Then came the silence.
A silence I hadn’t felt in years.

No thoughts. Just breath.

And with it came the tears.

Not from pain—but from something breaking open. Something ancient. Grief I didn’t know I was carrying. I let it rise. I let it fall. I cried in a way that felt sacred, like prayer. And in between the waves of emotion, I could feel something deeper settling inside me—an anchor.

A Gentle Purge

I didn’t vomit, but I did feel waves of nausea as energy moved. My hands trembled. My lips tingled. And then, slowly, the pressure lifted.

I felt… clear.

I looked around and noticed everything—the softness of the candlelight, the way the leaves outside moved in rhythm with my breath. I was back in my body. Fully. Gratefully.

The Integration

Afterward, I drank water and sat in silence. I didn’t want to speak. I wanted to be with what had just happened.

In the days since, I’ve noticed a quiet confidence inside me. Decisions feel easier. My meditation practice has deepened. I feel more connected to the Earth, more willing to face uncomfortable truths.

Rapé didn’t “fix” anything in me. It helped me remember what wholeness feels like. It stripped away the noise and brought me home to myself.

Final Thoughts

This medicine is not recreational. It’s sacred. It’s alive. It knows what to do. But it also asks for respect—deep respect.
